Paul Keller and Friends present Remembering Mr. and Mrs.
Swing: xylophonist/marimbist/vibraphonist Red Norvo and vocalist Mildred
Bailey. This special jazz event will be held at 7:00 PM at

Charter Township (at the SE corner of the intersection of M-5 and
Maple Road). Call the Steinway Piano Gallery at 248/569-9200. Admission

Red Norvo (Kenneth Norville) was a innovative pioneer of early
jazz music. His explorations into the use of the xylophone, marimba
and vibraphone were ground-breaking and delightful. Not long after
he joined the Paul Whiteman band in 1931, Norvo developed a relationship
with Whiteman's jazz vocalist Mildred Bailey. Norvo and Bailey were
wed in 1931 and went on to perform and record together for over a
decade. During the hey-days of the Swing Era, Red Norvo and Mildred
Bailey were dubbed "Mr. and Mrs. Swing." In his long and
impressive career, Norvo also made excellent recordings with a myriad
of jazz super-stars including Charlie Parker, Benny Goodman, Charles
Mingus and Frank Sinatra. Red Norvo died in 1999 at the ripe old age
of 91.
Mildred Bailey was the first great, white, female jazz singer.
Influenced by the stylings of Ethel Waters, Connie Boswell, and Bessie
Smith, she developed a uniquely soft yet swinging delivery that delighted
nightclub audiences wherever she appeared throughout the United States.
Although she is perhaps best remembered for her work in jazz, Bailey
enjoyed a good deal of success in popular music as well. Although
she appeared with some of the most successful bands of the Swing Era,
she ended her career as a solo performer, drawing thousands of appreciative
fans to her appearances at some of New York City's most popular jazz
clubs. Mildred Bailey died in 1951 at the far too young age of 44.
In addition to string bassist and leader Paul Keller, vibraphonist
Cary Kocher will play the role of Red Norvo and vocalist
Judie Cochill will sing the part of Mildred Bailey.
The band will also include trumpeter Mark Byerly, trombonist
Terry Kimura, saxophonist Keith Kaminski, pianist Cliff
Monear and drummer Scott Kretzer.
